Rule One of Business: Get Paid

To be paid, like you would realise is vitally the point at your business because if you are not getting paid, what are you doing in business?

You may be shocked at the loads of business people who only get their clients to make payment when and if they remember it. I know one business owner who always holds bad debts like accolades. Why? Most likely because he won’t bring himself to request the payment and allows people to intimidate him.

If you give a client credit, do it only because they cleared their worth to you by paying cash on delivery (COD) for a while. Moreover, you need to find whether they have the cash to pay you - if not then do not do business with them. Don’t trick yourself into thinking “I need the work” or “I need the sales”. It’s pointless in doing the service or providing the goods for zip if you are not paid.

If you are the type of person who can’t ask for the money when the service has been completed, try these cheats:
Tell your customer that when the job is done with, you need cash or cheque. They should likely have it on them at completion and you do not have to ask for your fee.

When handing out a quote, be sure your payment terms are understandable.

Do up an invoice including the terms of payment plainly stated and send the client the invoice when the service is done. They should review the invoice and reactively realise they have to pay the fee now without you having to say anything. Make up a “vicious boss” who will torture you alive if you don’t leave with the fee for the job.

Organise your banking institution to have you running with Merchant facilities so you can take credit cards for example Mastercard and Visa. The large majority of people utilize credit cards and it could prevent the issue of the client not having a cheque book or not having the cash on hand.

Likewise, don’t be persuaded against to hold the promised goods til after the payment has been made. Don’t forget, until the goods are paid for, they are still yours.

If you choose to permit someone credit, be sure you have got the following contact information off them at a time PREVIOUSLY you let them credit.

  • Name
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • Bank name and address
  • Account no.
  • 3 trade references with their names, addresses and phone numbers

After you have all this detail, contact the bank and make sure that they do operate an account at there. Then, contact each of the trade reference and request if they pay their bills correctly or if they have any problems with them.

Most people will be willing to tell you if the person is troublesome. If everything is OK, allow them a moderate level of debt, say no more than $500 (depending on your business). Monitor the operation of the account for a few months before allowing this amount to be exceeded.
